New Scout Year PDF Print E-mail

Dear Parents,

Time has come to organise a new scout year, we are meeting back on the Friday 12th September 2008 at 7:30pm in the school, with a registration night for the scouts.  This will allow us to get a grasp on the number of youths attending this year, if your son or daughter is unable to make this meeting please contact one of the leaders to make us aware of this (some numbers listed below) and if possible please return the registration form.

Many thanks to all the parents who helped with the camping equipment after summer camp, if you have equipment please return it that night, I would also like to appeal that if you have any other scout equipment that may be lurking in sheds, nook’s and cranny’s, under beds or under the stairs from previous hikes and events can you also return that.

We are introducing a Texting Service as we feel that many of our notes do not make it home after the Scout Meetings as we have had poor numbers turning up for activities over the past few years.  This has become very frustrating for leaders who give up their time and place a lot of effort into organising and running the events. Every time we send a note home we will also send out a multi-text to the nominated parent.

We also have an e-mail address for anyone who may wish to contact us; the address is This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it this will be sent to all the leaders in the Scout Section.  Any notes that are sent home with the scouts will also be sent via e-mail. We hope to become more environmentally friendly by reducing the number of paper letters sent home.  Don’t worry if you don’t have e-mail we will still continue to send you printed notes via the power of your Scout returning home from the meeting.  If you wish to receive email notices please email our address, if you do not wish to receive paper notices please inform your son or daughter not to take the notes home, this will help us reduce our printing costs in time.  Please do not use your son’s or daughter’s email address to register for this distribution list

We also have a web-site http://www.shankill-scouts.com/ here you will find many articles over the coming years, there are also Calenders for the scout section where you can check up on events that will be happening over the coming year.  All our notices will also be on this site.  We hope to update this site regularly so please keep coming back.

We have purchased some new equipment for the last summer camp and now we need to do some fundraising to pay for this equipment, if you are interested in organising or helping with fundraising please notify Shane and he will organise a meeting with the parents interested,

Please fill in the attached form and return it to the scout leaders on or before Friday 12th September

Policy and Procedures on Camping and Adventures in the Out of Doors PDF Print E-mail

Camping and adventures in the out of doors are real and fundamental parts of Scouting. Scouting Ireland’s youth programme is designed to train young people to explore and enjoy the out of doors with an awareness of their surroundings and an appreciation of the dangers involved.

Scouters need to be aware of the importance of camping and adventures in the out of doors, in the programme they provide to young people. Our young people expect a high level of outdoor activity. So, Scouters must be prepared to spend a lot of time in the out of doors!

Camps and expeditions have a unique role to play in our programmes and in the lives of our members. These activities are more than just holidays or weekends away. They provide young people with the opportunity to develop skills they have learnt and teach them to live in harmony with others. They must take place in our sections every year. They must be the highlight of our programming and the County and Provincial teams should be at the forefront in ensuring that they happen.

The encouragement and promotion of camping and overnights must be a major consideration for County and Provincial teams, with the national structures of the Association providing back-up support where necessary

The Scouts and the flood of Jamboree 2008

I have been in Scouts since I was 7 years old and was at Portmudna when I was 12 year old (so named as it was a Jamboree in Portumnia, Co. Galway where it rained for every day of the Jamboree.)  I have many fond memories of that camp.  The camp was so muddy from the rain I remember talking to a medic some years later who worked on the Jamboree and he described the type and severity of the injuries they treated were the same as those found on Ski-Sloops.

On the parents day of this camp my parents arrived and took me off site, I thought they were taking me home and I cried, but they were taking my to Galway to wash and dry my clothes and buy me new Rain-Gear and Welles and then they sent me straight back into it.
